Not Another Public Process - take one

----------

Exhibition Not Another Public Process starts from a fictional quote that could have been stated by different fictional characters in the current political and societal climate. Contemporary forms of combinations of activist and visual art have challenged political processes and democratic societies. Art has changed how we understand public and media space and the limits of it. "Not Another Public Process" have been stated by a frustrated politician getting tired of artistic activism.

On the other hand, current parliamentary democratic institutions and the public space connected to them have been under heavy criticism. Problems occurring in democratic institutions caused for example the forming of the Occupy movement. "Not Another Public Process" have been stated on the Taksim square or on Occupy Wall street in frustration towards bourgeois and mainstream public space.

Exhibition sets a contexts trough this two-fold frustration for artistic and activist approaches to public space in Finland and contemporary ways of understanding gallery space as public space trough artistic practices. In core of the publicness is narratives mixing fact and fiction on how publicness and democratic process enables us to claim for better conditions for the future. Artistic practices and media tactics narrate and produce utopian and fictive possibilities to state and experience new ways of being in public with others.

Participant artists are Timo Bredenberg, JP Kaljonen & Johanna Raekallio, Anne Lehtelä, Heidi Saramäki, Jukka Silokunnas and Teemu Takatalo.

Exhibition is realized in the context of the collaboration between artist-run Rajatila Gallery at Tampere Finland and Upper Lab at Bergamo, Italy. It is curated by Jussi Koitela. As another part of the collaboration is exhibition organized by curator Emanuele Meschini and artists from Upper Lab at Gallery Rajatila June 2015. Exhibition is supported by Frame Visual Art Finland and Arts Promotion Centre Finland.
